Walter Henry Sweet (United Kingdom, 1889-1943) is known for his beautifully done watercolors around Europe. The painting we have here depicts The Doone Valley, located within Exmoor National Park on the Somerset/Devon border. It is a tranquil, scenic area famous as the setting for R.D. Blackmore’s 1869 novel, Lorna Doone. This watercolor on paper features a mountain background with winding valley. The mountainside is covered with foliage, highlighted with a patch of purple wildflowers in the foreground. The painting is signed lower left «W.H.Sweet, it is signed and titled in pencil along lower border «#606 – The Doone Valley – by W.H. Sweet , ?» The painting is housed in a gilt wooden molding frame with white textured mat and protective glass front. The painting is ready to hang and displays beautifully.
