Up for your consideration tonight is Original Genuine Antique Oil on Canvas Painting by influential PA impressionist artist Elizabeth Wallace Cameron (fl. 1908-1930). The painting measures 16 x 20 inches for the canvas itself and comes to 19.5 x 23.5 inches for overall size. The painting is signed “Elizabeth W Cameron” in the bottom right corner and has no date but I’d dare to suggest this is one of her early works and would, probably, date to 1900-1910s. The signature is smooth and not “labored in” as some of her later paintings show and you can see the hand of young yet developing artist who must have been influenced by Van Gogh at that time (judging by the brushwork). The painting is housed into its original walnut (?) frame that had been hand-painted to match the color palette of the art work. This is a rare find (and fresh to the market) of such quality as the painting comes in its untouched yet superb condition. All thanks to the glass that was installed on top of the canvas for protection. Normally you can only find such things in the museums and I feel like giving “two thumbs up” to the previous owner for going extra mile to preserve the painting and I can assure you – it has paid off big time! The colors are still fresh and vibrant, not a single trace of dust or grime and I do not see any flaws or repairs of any kind. Just one thing to mention is a small “rub off” to the frame on its left side. Pardon the glare from the glass that occurred during taking the pictures and please notice the original “Kaufmann Building” sticker on the back that would have suggested the painting was framed there back in 1930s or 1940s and perhaps even was exhibited at Kaufmann’s as Ms. Cameron has had a numerous exhibitions through her career and Kaufmann’s had been a face of Pittsburgh’s fashion and art scene for many years until it sadly closed down in 2006. Elizabeth Wallace Cameron was quite an influential artist on Pittsburgh art scene back in 1900s so there should be no surprises that some of her paintings are offered sometimes through East Coast auction houses. For example, one of her late paintings was recently offered through Concept Art Gallery here in Pittsburgh back in 2019 (sold with hammer price of 3,000.00 dollars) and another one was sold by Doyle’s Auction House (MA State) back in 2012 for 5,625.00 dollars. This is just my personal opinion but I feel this painting deserves to be included into one of those “PA Impressionist Artists” exhibitions that are typically organized by PA Museums from time to time.
