Joan Cresswell-Velligan

For your consideration is this large, vintage original mid-century modern abstract oil painting on canvas. It is by Illinois artist, Joan Cresswell-Velligan, (1929-1994) and is signed by the artist, lower right and dated 1959. It comes in what looks like an original narrow wood frame that measures 35×45″ overall, with the stretched canvas measuring 34×42″. The artist was born in Alton, Illinois and was head of the art department at Blackburn college in Carlinville. This large and impressive work was created right after she opened her gallery in 1958. It is an abstract portrayal that is untitled, but I can’t help but think how much it resembles a city or streetscape. Just a thought. Please study the photos and ask any questions you may have.
