To learn more about us please click on our profile ON DEMAND WE ISSUE A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (money-back-guarantee) The sitter in this small, good quality oil portrait (he appears to be about 20/25 years of age) is shown wearing the uniform of a second-lieutenant of the Leib-Garde-Regiment of Electorate of Hesse (formerly Hessen-Kassel) from the 1830s. In that period, this regiment counted 16 second-lieutenants: all of them – young men with no awards; most of them – offspring of noble Hessian families (see our image nr.7). Leib-Garde-Regiment was stationed in Kassel – an indication that the author of this painting was a (clearly leading!) portraitist working in that city in the 1830s. The first artist’s name that comes to mind is that of Ferdinand Tellgmann (1811-1897), who – as is known – from 1827 studied painting at the Kassel Academy, with special emphasis on portraiture. From 1838, he lived in Eschwege/Wanfried (Electorate of Hesse), while retaining his popularity and continuing to draw a wide range of clients. For his extensive biography, see our image nr.8.
